When we opened our doors nearly 3 years ago, our mission was to create Baltimore’s most affordable, accessible, and capable makerspace, with the ultimate goal of becoming self-sufficient, without charitable contributions or corporate subsidies. 2018 was a banner year for us, with over 1,000 classes held and more than 10,000 individual member visits. Although we also generated record revenues, they weren’t sufficient to overcome our operating deficit. We were unable to secure additional funding and now have to cease operations in City Garage.
On Sunday, January 27, The Foundery at City Garage will close its doors for the last time. We will remain open during regularly-scheduled hours until then so members can remove personal items. We intend to hold all scheduled classes through the 27th for members who are currently signed up. Regardless, we will refund members for those classes as well as all remaining classes, gift cards, and paid account balances over the next several weeks.
Our entrepreneurial approach to building a new kind of makerspace was risky and untested, but it generated many positive results. In addition to teaching thousands of people new skills, we supported hundreds of entrepreneurs and startups who used The Foundery as their launchpad into business. We also pioneered an innovative approach to workforce training where dozens of Baltimore City residents were introduced to manufacturing and the skilled trades. Along the way, we’ve had the support of more people and organizations than we can count, but we owe a special debt of gratitude to our business partner, Sagamore Ventures.
We aren’t finished yet, not by a long shot. We tell our members that The Foundery is a place to try new things, learn from mistakes, and try again. Although we are closing our City Garage location, we expect to begin development of our next location on Central Avenue in Baltimore later this year. We’ll incorporate all those lessons learned into a new approach and be back, better than ever.
From all of us on The Foundery team, thank you.
